POZITIVE ENERGY DISTRICTS
The European Union Horizon Project aims to improve the urban-rural balance and provide innovative solutions in energy supply by increasing the sustainability of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) through innovations in areas such as urban agriculture and transportation. We are taking part in the project as Turkey's project coordinator!
The overall objective of the project is to increase the viability of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) through technological and social innovations in urban agriculture, green/waste management and transportation. Adding innovative components to PEDs enhances ethical business models based on circular resources and social innovations for the robust energy supply of urban systems, including urban-rural relations and transportation within this system. This innovation is to increase the resilience and viability of PEDs by adding innovative approaches to PED components and improving off-grid operations, providing innovative business models and energy carriers in urban systems using energy recycling through the food cycle and biogas. The innovative components incorporated in PEDs harmonize urban-rural relationships in Sweden, Turkey and Italy while providing ecosystem services (e.g. closing nutrient cycles, ensuring food security, mitigating climate change). The expected outcome is improved extended guidelines for PEDs developed in conjunction with the creation of innovative and inclusive positive energy communities.
The Turkish leg of this project is being implemented in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul. In cooperation with the Kadıköy Municipality, the PED concept is being worked on and it is aimed to expand and improve the scope of the application area of this concept.
