We participated in "EELISA International Co-creation Workshops: Benchmarking the 15-Minute Cities Challenge in Europe" event

This workshop was organized under EELISA-ON-THE-MOVE with the participation of Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM), Ecole des Ponts ParisTech (ENPC), Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) and Friedrich-Slexander Universitat Erlangen Nürnberg (FAU) in three time slots and three different locations with common objectives.

The first seminar was conducted simultaneously in Madrid and Istanbul by Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) and Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in June 2023.

As the coordinator of the event in Turkey, a three-day seminar was organized on 17,18,19 July 2023. On the first day of the seminar, Prof. Dr. Andres Monzon (EEMOVE coordinator, UPM) and Prof. Dr. Hande Demirel (ITU) gave a welcoming speech and information about the event. Afterwards, theoretical informative sessions with experts in the field were held and followed by discussions.

On the second day of the seminar, experts from Kadıköy Municipality came together at Design Workshop Kadıköy (TAK). Mert Yaman, an Urban and Regional Planning Specialist, provided information about 15-minute cities and their evaluation within the scope of Kadıköy district.

On the second day of the seminar, five groups of three students from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) conducted a multidisciplinary field study in which they examined the Yeldeğirmeni, Altıyol, Bahariye, Kalamış, Fenerbahçe areas in line with the 15-minute city concept.

On the third and final day of the seminar, the students worked as a team on their fieldwork, analyzing the study areas in terms of the 15-minute city concept and proposing various solutions. The students presented their work to professors from different disciplines and three different experts from Kadıköy Municipality. As a result of the presentations, the group whose work was selected first by the juries was announced.

As a result of the jury evaluations, two groups were declared the winners with equal points. The winning groups had the chance to go to Paris.

The cauldron groups shared their experiences of 15-minute cities in their countries and listened to the work done in Madrid and Budapest, where the first example of a 15-minute city was explored with Carlos Moreno, the creator of the idea, in the Clichy-Batignolles district of Paris.

The concept of the '15-minute city' refers to a city of livable and connected neighborhoods where people can meet their needs within a short distance of home. This approach aims to help revitalize cities in the post-COVID-19 era, reconnecting people with local areas and decentralizing urban life. The 15-minute city reduces the need to travel, offers more public space, revitalizes local streets, strengthens a sense of community and improves the sustainability and liveability of cities by improving health and climate resilience.

How to build back better with a 15-minute city.

At the last stage of the event, we returned to our country and shared information with the Municipality officials. The similarities and differences between our solutions and the solutions implemented in Paris were discussed.

As a result of the discussions, it is possible to say that the municipal authorities liked our work and solutions very much!
